This image from the CARLI Digital Collection really highlights the difference between the way buildings can act. In the picture above, people interact with the building and linger around enjoying their coffee, lunch, or popcorn. As the back of the image reads:

Compare that with its current tenant and you’ll find that people no longer stand around enjoying the street, they are just looking to get in a car and get on the road.
