Stat: Nine in ten homebuilders report building or planning smaller, lower-priced homes than in the past.

The wildly unsustainable practice of building houses that are unnecessarily large for the sake of having more square feet seems to be on the decline. Trends indicate that the average home size is expected to shrink by 10% by the 2015.

McMansions had their 15 seconds of fame and it appears that what glittered wasn’t gold. Demographic trends of an aging population with empty-nester’s looking to downsize, an increase of singles in the marketplace, and a more environmentally conscious buyer no longer needs a sprawling estate.
